When a tree falls. Final moments caught

Updated: Apr 22, 2020

I was biking by 115 Northwestern Ave when I noticed they were about to bring down the final section of this magnificent tree. Three men were working on it, and they used a truck to pull the tree down away from the houses. Very sad to see it go. But at least it didn’t go easily…

However, it is important to note that this tragedy could have been prevented if Ottawa’s “distinctive tree” bylaw actually had some legal teeth. The only difference between this heritage tree and another smaller tree? The name of the permit (I’m told not even the cost). And as you can see, that’s a really effective deterrent to removing them when they become “inconvenient”. Shame on us Ottawa. --Dennis Van Staalduinen

Note: It took 6 days to remove the massive tree. This image shows day 1 or day 2 of the massacre.
