National Tree Day with our neighbourhood’s Grade 3 students

As we’ve been doing since 2012, and with support from the Champlain Park Community Association, the Champlain Oaks project will plant trees on National Tree Day with students from St. George Catholic Primary school.
National Tree Day (originated by Tree Canada) is Wednesday, Sept. 26. It happens right in the middle of National Forest Week, which Ecology Ottawa has decided to mark during this year’s municipal election by making trees an election issue. We’ve invited both candidates seeking election as Kitchissippi Ward 15 councillor to attend our National Tree Day event. It’s your chance as a voter to engage with them on issues related to tree protection, tree planting and the urban canopy.
BEFORE NATIONAL TREE DAY:
Volunteers are needed to prepare the ground in the National Capital Commission (NCC) forest north of Pontiac Street for National Tree Day, and to help prepare fences to protect the saplings.
Contact Daniel Buckles (daniel.buckles@gmail.com) to pitch in from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. any evening this week–from Sept 17 until Sept 21. We will dig holes for 8 trees to be planted in the NCC forest along Pontiac Ave. as part of the Champlain Park Community Association’s partnership with the NCC. Three of the holes will be for trees planted with the Grade 3 students. If you don’t want to dig, you can help prepare the fences needed to protect the saplings. ON NATIONAL TREE DAY:
Gather at the front entrance of St. George school on Keyworth Ave. at 1:15 p.m. We’ll walk together to the NCC forest where we’ll plant 3 saplings.
